This year, BitSummit 2026 took place earlier in the season than usual, welcoming attendees to a beautifully cool Kyoto. Titled “BitSummit PUNCH High Impact”, the three-day event ran from May 22 to 24. Following the business-only first day, May 23 and 24 opened up to the general public, drawing massive crowds of passionate fans.

On Business Day, developers, publishers, media, and sponsors held meetings and interviews, planting the seeds for indie games to take off globally. But what happens once the Public Days begin? We hit the show floor to find out exactly why BitSummit becomes more loved by its participants year after year.

Continually breaking attendance records

As a co-sponsor of BitSummit, KYOTO CMEX interviewed the management team ahead of the event to learn the secrets behind its ever-growing success. Before diving into this report, check out our interview article to get the full backstory: Interview: Upcoming BitSummit PUNCH! Reason 1: You can see the “people” behind the games

If you had to sum up why BitSummit is loved by so many people in one word, it would be because you can see the “people” behind the games at the venue. The people who make games. The people who play them. The people who spread the word, support them, talk business, interview creators, and stream them. BitSummit brings together people from all kinds of positions surrounding indie games. However, this relationship is not a one-way street.

Developers watch the attendees’ reactions and use them for their next improvements and announcements. Attendees listen to the creators’ words, deepening their attachment to the works. The Media delivers that excitement to the outside world through articles and videos. Publishers & Sponsors create the paths for the works to reach even further.

You can truly experience the theme of “High Impact”—which was discussed in the pre-event interview—right here on the spot. It was clear to see that even without a huge budget or a large number of people, you can move people’s hearts if you have a strong idea and passion. The BitSummit venue was lined with many games that stood as proof of this.

The size of the Miyako Messe venue also supports this unique BitSummit feel. The exquisite size of the venue—neither too big nor too small—creates chance encounters as you walk around the booths. After playing a game, you can walk just a little bit and experience another developer’s work. You watch the stage, and then you go back to the booths. This ease of moving around feels like it leads to a sense of unity across the entire event.

Reason 2: Livestreams and the Internet connect Kyoto to the world

Throughout the weekend, the physical booths at Miyako Messe were paired with official livestreams and influencer-led content. This meant that even those who couldn’t make it to Kyoto could still experience the BitSummit atmosphere in real-time from anywhere in the world.

The main stage programs were broadcast live, allowing fans to join the conversation via chat sections and social media. Even if someone missed out this year, the stream might just inspire them to attend in person next time. (Japanese page: [DAY 2] BitSummit PUNCH 1F Stage Stream! CREATORS TALK & PUNCH PLAY LIVE).

Furthermore, well-known content creators kept the excitement going with game streams even after the venue closed its doors for the night. For 72 hours straight, the gaming world was completely painted in BitSummit colors, highlighted by special streams like Nobaman and Guchitsubo’s Challenge! Indie Game Playthrough [BitSummit PUNCH Edition] (Japanese steream).

Steam also hosted a dedicated event page featuring the exhibiting titles. This made it incredibly easy for gamers to access demos and add upcoming titles to their wishlists, allowing them to keep track of their favorite discoveries long after the weekend ended.

Reason 3: Massive benefits for the exhibitors

Public Days are fantastic for general attendees to play games and socialize, but they offer incredible value for the creators as well. “We came here to have people play-test our unreleased game and fill out surveys so we can use that feedback directly in our development”, one booth representative shared. Many booths handed out custom novelties and swag to anyone who tried their demos, creating a perfect win-win relationship between exhibitors and players.

Above all, it is a rare and priceless opportunity for developers to see gamers’ raw, unfiltered reactions. “Seeing someone smile while playing a game I built completely recharges my development motivation”, a programmer standing at a demo booth told us. “I got so much great feedback; I can’t wait to get back to work on Monday”.

In fact, multiple booth staff mentioned that even if a player doesn’t buy the game immediately, getting a Wishlist registration on Steam makes the entire trip to BitSummit worth it. Because of this, developers put immense effort into promoting their booths and giving out high-quality promotional items.

Plenty of ways to enjoy the full Kyoto experience

Because BitSummit’s Public Days take place over Saturday and Sunday, it makes for a perfect weekend getaway. The organizers make sure attendees are well taken care of, especially when it comes to food. The indoor food booths offered a fantastic variety of meals, satisfying both the eyes and the taste buds. There were plenty of rest areas to sit down and relax, and visitors could also easily access the restaurant inside Miyako Messe or local cafes nearby.

What makes the Miyako Messe area truly special is its cultural surroundings. It sits right next to iconic landmarks like Heian Jingu Shrine, the Kyoto Kyocera Museum of Art, and the Kyoto City Zoo. Once you finish checking out the games, you can step right out into a classic sightseeing tour, making it easy to enjoy a full, well-rounded day in Kyoto.

Conclusion: BitSummit is loved because of connection in games and people

What happened during the Public Days was far more than just a series of game demos; it was the exact moment where games and people connected to form lasting relationships. By speaking face-to-face in the same space, a game shifts from being just “an interesting title” to “something you genuinely want to root for.” These personal experiences then ripple outward through social media and word-of-mouth, drawing in new players and sparking future business.

The seeds planted on Business Day are nurtured and grown by the pure enthusiasm of the players on the Public Days. The fact that this ecosystem flows so naturally is the real reason why BitSummit is so deeply loved year after year. Playing games, meeting people, and falling in love with creative works—this simple, foundational experience is a unique value that you can truly only find at BitSummit.
