Interview: Upcoming BitSummit PUNCH! Over 58,000 Visitors and the Secret to its Growth: B2B Focus and Proximity to Developers

BitSummit, Japan’s premier indie game festival, is evolving once again for its 14th edition in 2026 as “BitSummit PUNCH”. As a co-organizer, we KYOTO CMEX has long followed the creative energy radiating from Kyoto to the world.
With about one month to go, we spoke with Mr. Ishihara from the Kyoto Prefecture, an organizer of the event. From the rapid growth reflected in the numbers to the behind-the-scenes of the Business Day and this year’s new initiatives, we bring you the latest on the “heat” of BitSummit 2026.
High Impact!: Moving the World Through the Power of Creation

—— The name “PUNCH” really stands out this year. Could you tell us about the meaning behind the title and the subtitle, “High Impact”?
Ishihara: We theme BitSummit every year based on motifs from game culture. For 2026, we chose “Fighting Games” as our motif, leading to the simple and powerful name “BitSummit PUNCH”. “High Impact” refers to the idea of “using small resources to exert a massive influence on the industry”. It carries our belief that it isn’t just about efficiency; rather, it is the purity of creation and passion that truly has the power to move the world.
Painting Kyoto in the Colors of Games
BitSummit celebrates its 14th year in 2026. Each year, the event has gained momentum, and the data clearly reflects the intense interest from both the industry and fans.
| 2023 | 2024 | 2025 | |
| Visitors | 23,789 | 38,333 | 58,065 |
| Sponsors | 29 companies | 44 companies | 58 companies |
While the number of exhibitors is limited by the venue’s capacity (selection process is a lottery each year), but Ishihara says “we are seeing a staggering expansion in recognition, but we want to continue providing opportunities for as many diverse creators as possible”.
The “Proximity” to Developers: A Unique Edge

Anyone who has visited BitSummit knows its signature “closeness”. The halls of Miyako Messe are packed with booths where trial versions and novelties are within arm’s reach. We asked how the organizers view this unique atmosphere.
—— What do you consider to be the strength of BitSummit?
Ishihara: BitSummit is specifically focused on indie games. Since developers are often individuals or small groups, that sense of proximity is exactly what characterizes the event. At other major exhibitions, you often speak with a company’s sales representative, but at BitSummit, you can usually talk directly to the person who actually made the game.
—— What is the significance of holding a physical event in Kyoto?

Ishihara: Kyoto is a global hub for content like film, games, and manga. With over 60 game-related companies and thriving academic research in the field, it is the perfect place for creators to connect. We believe these interactions drive new business matching, activate the indie market, and promote industrial growth through gaming.
Cross-Media Synergy: KYOTO CMEX leverages strengths across games, anime, and manga. Last year, BitSummit collaborated with KYOMAF (Kyoto International Manga Anime Fair) for mutual booth exhibitions. They considers this partnership to foster an environment where a wide range of creators can inspire each other, leading to new works and the development of “cross-media talent”.
Supporting the B2B Frontline
While the public days are famous for their excitement, one of BitSummit’s essential pillars is the Business Day.

—— Many may not be aware of what happens during the private Business Day. Could you elaborate?
Ishihara: BitSummit was originally founded to promote B2B networking and creator interaction, so Business Day is vital. We provide a dedicated business lounge and utilize the “MeetToMatch” service to facilitate professional matching (The “MeetToMatch” service is only available for Business Day tickets purchased before May 12, 2026) .

—— The event feels very international. How do you support overseas teams regarding language barriers?
Ishihara: Last year, out of 122 total exhibitors, 62—roughly half—were from overseas. Supporting international exchange is a core goal, and we have many staff members capable of providing translation support on the floor.
This Year’s Main Event: The Official Pitch Night
—— What is the “can’t-miss” highlight for 2026?
Ishihara: Our first-ever Official Pitch Event. In previous years, we collaborated with Shueisha’s “Game Creators CAMP“, but this year it becomes an official BitSummit event. Held on the evening of May 21st after setup, it provides a closed, high-level environment for developers and publishers to engage in deep business discussions.
BitSummit PUNCH Kicks Off May 22, 2026!
As BitSummit enters its 14th year, it is clearer than ever that despite its massive scale, the “punch” that drives the event is the individual creativity of the developers. It is more than just a game trial; it is a place to touch the soul of creation.
