Mystery novel “Kyoto Teramachi Sanjo no Holmes” written by Mai Mochizuki
Kura is an antique store located in the Teramachi Sanjo shopping street. The store owner’s son, Kiyotaka Iegashira, is nicknamed ”Holmes” because he has an eye for discerning the value of things and a keen intuition. Aoi Mashiro, a high school girl, meets Kiyotaka by chance and ends up working part-time at the storehouse. The two solve requests related to antiques brought into the store one after another. Based on the comic version of this novel that takes place in the streets of Kyoto, it was made into an anime in July 2018, and is currently being broadcast on TV.
We will introduce the scenery of Kyoto that appears in the anime in several parts, as if following the TV broadcast.
In episode 7, the heated appraisal showdown between Kiyotaka and Ensei was a sight to behold.
At Professor Yanagihara’s birthday party, a game was played to determine the authenticity of works of antique art. Kiyotaka succeeded in the appraisal game “For the youngest appraisers”. From the round hand mirror given to him, he discovers that the place he should be heading to is Genkoan. Ensei was waiting there. There are two famous windows in the main hall of Genkoan. The circular window is called the “Window of enlightenment”, and the square window is called the “Window of confusion”. The place where Ensei talks about his upbringing and how he became involved in forgeries is in front of the “Window of Lost”. The “Window of confusion” symbolizes human life and represents the hardships of birth, old age, illness, and death. Perhaps Ensho chose this place on purpose as a suitable place to talk about himself.
▲ “Window of confusion” and “Window of enlightenment”. Each one has its own unique way of letting in light.
▲This is the Sanmon gate of Genkoan. During the autumn foliage season, many people flock to see the beautiful autumn leaves.
▲ The Bloody Ceiling where you can clearly see blood stains, is also located inside Genkoan. The blood stains from the footprints that appear in the story actually exist.
Please look for it.
Episode 8 was about Kiyotaka’s ex-lover, Izumi, asking him to break his fiancée’s alibi.
The featured area is around Kitayama. The main street of Kitayama, “Kitayama Dori” is lined with cafes and restaurants. Nearby are the Kyoto Botanical Garden and Nakaragi-no-Michi, a famous cherry blossom viewing spot, making the cityscape rich in nature and relaxing. During the Christmas season, the “Kitayama Wedding Street Christmas Illumination” is held mainly around churches in Kitayama. I wonder if Kiyotaka and Aoi would also be pushed by this romantic atmosphere and suddenly become closer to each other, but… (Lol).
In this episode, in addition to the Kyoto Botanical Garden, many buildings and foods that are familiar to Kyoto people will be featured, such as the Kyoto Concert Hall, the apple pie from Baikal that Aoi’s mother served to Kiyotaka and the bean mochi from Demachi Futaba. Please check it out when you go on a pilgrimage to a sacred place.
▲ This is the viewing greenhouse in Kyoto Botanical Garden.
The “Annual Passport” that Kiyotaka gave Aoi is sold for 1000 yen, just like in the story.
▲The Kyoto Botanical Garden is home to approximately 12,000 types of plants, and you can also see the Futaba mallow.
Please look for it!
As the story progresses, the seasons in the story also change from summer to autumn to winter. Please enjoy the animation of the scenery of Kyoto, which changes its appearance depending on the season.
Look forward to the next article!
